At the end of last month Google announced an important update to its algorithm that will significantly impact search results. It plans to expand their use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal starting on April 21, 2015.
If your website isn’t mobile-optimized, it won’t rank as well in Google and could quickly become invisible in mobile search results. Are you ready for this shift?
Go Mobile Or Go Home
Ultimately, Google wants their users to get the most relevant, high-quality search results no matter what device they’re using. That’s why they’ve made updates in the past to ensure websites are configured properly and are viewable on modern devices. This is the next logical step as more and more sites are being browsed on mobile devices.
If your site doesn’t have a mobile-friendly design, or if it does but you want to ensure that it passes the test, Google offers a couple of resources. To test a few pages, use their Mobile-Friendly Test. If you have a Google Webmaster Tools account, you can get a full Mobile Usability Report listing any mobile usability issues.
Will You Be Ready On April 21?
The good news is that many website owners have been moving in this direction for sometime now. These days, we create mobile-responsive sites for our clients by default (and they do pass the mobile-friendly test).
